The “Promoting Livelihoods and Resilience of Urban Refugees in Mombasa” project was implemented by Haki Centre (HCO) from July 26, 2021, to July 25, 2022, in Mombasa County, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Kenya. Following a successful needs assessment and beneficiary selection process, the project supported 59 refugee-owned businesses with grants to help them cope with the adverse economic effects of COVID-19. Of the 59 businesses supported, 25 were owned by men while 34 were women-owned. Grants were provided in-kind and distributed in two phases, reaching 35 beneficiaries in the first phase and 24 in the second phase.
The Project also focused on vocational skills-building, whereby soap-making training was conducted for 35 refugees and 15 members of the host community. Participants acquired practical soap-making skills and received soap-making ingredients along with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) guidelines on mass production, packaging, and branding. The training focused on unique types of liquid soap, shampoo, shower gel, and bar soap.
As a result of the growing concerns about mental health, 59 refugees participated in group therapy and healing sessions led by an expert who conducted a psychological assessment to identify mental health challenges among refugees, their potential causes, and suggested remedies. The assessment revealed the prevalence of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and panic attacks, as well as unhealthy coping habits, and expressed suicidal thoughts amongst refugees and recommended specific remedies for each condition, private consultations and therapy.
